Argentina has long been a destination for the rich and famous, tempted by the space and privacy, polo, world class wine, Argentine beef and sheer size of the country.  Regular residents of Argentina now include Tommy Lee Jones, Sylvester Stallone and the Benetton Group among others, and lovers of Argentina include Princes William and Harry, Robbie Williams and now Madonna too.

But you don’t have to be a millionaire to buy property in Argentina.  Whether you’re looking to buy an apartment in Buenos Aires, a vineyard in Mendoza or an estancia in Patagonia, property in Argentina offers great value, but what can your money buy you?

In this guide to where to buy property in Argentina, our resident expat living in Mendoza will guide you through the best locations for international citizens to acquire a home in this fascinating and fabulous nation.

The most popular location for buying property in Argentina is in Buenos Aires, a fantastic and vibrant city rich with a mix of European and Latin American heritage.  The city is divided up into neighbourhoods each with their own distinct colours and forms.  From the district of La Boca with pressed gaudily painted tin houses, to San Telmo with a mix of Spanish and Italian colonial buildings to Viejo Palermo, funky and bohemian and now being called the new Hollywood, Buenos Aires has districts, styles and prices to suit all pockets.

Apartments in Buenos Aires can be had from £40,000 upwards, and range from small modern studio apartments to grand affairs in old colonial buildings.  2 bedroom 2 bath ultra luxury apartments in areas like Palermo Soho, one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires, are on the market with price tags around the £150,000 mark - and you can expect to rent out a similar property for around £2,000 per month for short term tourist rentals.

Foreigners are also buying property in Argentina outside of Buenos Aires.  If you want to find vineyards for sale, look no further than the province of Mendoza.  Situated around 1,000 kilometres west of Buenos Aires you can buy vineyards from £40,000.  Lujan de Cuyo near the city of Mendoza is currently being called the next Napa Valley and has featured heavily in property supplements in the likes of “The Wall Street Journal” and “The Telegraph”.

Vineyards for sale in Lujan de Cuyo can reach over £32,000 per acre, but you can find cheaper vineyards for sale further south in and around San Rafael where prices start from £1,500 per acre.

Another popular area to buy property in Argentina is Barriloche, the St. Moritz of Argentina.  Located in the Andes Mountains amidst Argentina’s lake district, Barriloche offers year round tourism opportunities.  Prices for ski chalets start at around £100,000, and these can be rented from £700 per week during the ski season which runs between July and September.  During the summer months there are plenty of tourists hiking in the mountains, riding or fishing in the lakes - so rental potential for property is high.  Put that alongside the fact that properties in Argentina’s tourist destinations have risen 60% since 2004, and you’ve got another excellent reason to buy property in Argentina.
