According to a recent report in the English language Spanish CB Friday newspaper, property developers in Spain are beginning to worry that Spanish property is losing its appeal overseas.
The report went on to highlight the fact that the Spanish tourism industry is also on edge as it was rocked recently by falling visitor numbers for 2005 and because well known travel companies have been cutting back in Spain by up to 25%.
It seems that all is not well in Spain!
Basically the issues stem from the fact that Spain has been resting on its laurels - it established itself as the most desirable holiday destination and as the best place in the world for expatriates and then it sat back and enjoyed its number one position.
However - in this brave new world of cheap travel and investment property mania, Spain has failed to see competitors creeping up on it and stealing market share! Spain is no longer the property hotspot or tourist capital that it once was!
The newspaper report highlights the fact that major countries like Australia and Canada have their government’s backing to promote hard and attract property purchasers and also expatriate migrants looking for a new life abroad. These big guns are out and dominating presence at many of the international property shows taking place around the world currently for example. At the Fresh Start Show in London recently, Spain was overshadowed by these powerful countries and by the likes of Florida which has steadily intensified in attraction for Brits seeking an escape overseas and those who recognise a weak dollar when they see one!
Furthermore, those interested in buying property in Spain have begun to realise that they can sometimes get far more for their Euros in the likes of Northern Cyprus, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Estonia.
But Spain doesn’t really have too much to worry about, as long as it recognises the fact that a little bit of promotion is a good thing, and keeping ideas fresh in the public’s mind is wise. And it’s not as if it’s hard to promote property in Spain...after all properties particularly along the beautiful Mediterranean coastal region benefit from perfect year round weather, they are easily and cheaply accessible from the UK and mainland Europe, Spain has fantastic infrastructure and communications, it is a sophisticated and straightforward first world country with a well establish property buying process that generally presents no surprises, and EU passport holders are free to come and go and live and work in Spain.
