There’s a commonly held dream of relocating to a tumbledown rural retreat in Italy and transforming it into a traditional and comfortable Italian country home and as a result the amount of rustic property for sale in Italy has actually dwindled in recent years because of the sheer volume of people turning their dream into a reality!
But never fear there are still some real bargains to be found in Italy if you know where to look and if you dream of finding a rustic property for sale in Italy this article should help point you in the right direction.
Probably the six best regions for rustic property in Italy are Abruzzo, Marche, Puglia, Sardinia and of course Tuscany and Umbria. Each region has a very different feel and you may find yourself drawn to one more than the others but here’s a look at what’s on offer in terms of rustic properties for sale and also the general attractions of each region.
Abruzzo is far less well known that its neighbours Tuscany and Umbria and yet this central eastern region of Italy is untouched, stunningly beautiful and offers the visitor or expatriate resident everything from incredibly impressive snow capped mountains to unspoilt vast sandy beaches on the Adriatic Sea.
Abruzzo has caves, mountains, rivers, castles, national parks, festivals and fantastic cuisine and for the rustic property hunter there’s even more good news, property prices in Abruzzo are up to half those of Umbria and Tuscany and the amount of rural, rustic, rundown and renovation property for sale in Abruzzo is in abundance because the region has yet to be discovered by the masses.
Marche or The Marches region of Italy also borders the Adriatic Sea and boasts a stunning natural landscape. Because the region is in Northern Italy it is also lesser well known than Umbria, Tuscany and the southern tourist regions of the country and as a result property prices are vastly reduced and the whole region is not overrun with visitors.
Ryanair and Easyjet both now fly from the UK to Le Marche so it is becoming better known and is obviously more accessible so chances are this will have a short to medium term effect on prices meaning that a property investor should get in now to enjoy this period of growth and those looking for a second or new home in Italy should also consider buying now before the region becomes too pricey.
In contrast to the previous two regions Puglia is located in Southern Italy, it is right at the south eastern tip of the country and is blessed with hundreds of kilometres of stunning beaches. Property in Puglia is more popular and slightly more expensive but if you hunt carefully you can still bag yourself a beautifully located rustic property in need of some serious TLC and transform it into your dream home in Italy.
The island of Sardinia is a typical Mediterranean island gem with a stunning climate, friendly locals and a landscape that blends from white sandy beaches to pine forests to rugged mountain peaks and where property prices range from incredibly cheap to massively expensive because the range of property available in Sardinia also ranges from rustic, rural and in need of renovation to luxury, inimitable and iconic!
Ryanair now fly to Sardinia from the UK which has opened up the island to more tourism and which makes Sardinia an excellent destination for those seeking investment potential from their property purchase.
And finally the ever popular regions of Umbria and Tuscany which have been slightly overrun by Brits in search of their dream home in Italy. It’s possible to find rustic properties in both regions but many of these homes have already been renovated, modernised and competed and property prices tend to reflect this and the fact that both regions are so well known. On the plus side any properties you do find still in need of transformation will net you very good returns once renovated in both Tuscany and Umbria.
Whatever type of rustic property you’re seeking and however large or small your budget you will find something to suit both your pocket and dream if you hunt around Italy and are prepared to step off the beaten track.
