Puglia (or Apulia) is the south-eastern region of Italy sometimes referred to as the heel on the Italian boot. Property for sale in Puglia is growing in attraction - not only with overseas buyers seeking that perfect home in the sun, but also with Italians from the North of Italy keen to escape to the stunning countryside of Apulia.
Generally speaking property prices in Puglia are more favourable than elsewhere in southern Italy and with low cost airlines recently opening up this region of Italy to the UK and Europe, demand for property for sale and rent in Apulia is set to soar in 2006 and beyond.
Puglia has coastlines on both the Adriatic and the Ionian Seas and wherever you are in the region you are never more than a mere 30km away from a pretty, sandy beach or a breathtaking stretch of coastline. The climate in Apulia is strictly Mediterranean with long hot summers, a balmy spring and autumn and temperate winters making the entire region one of the most desirable in Italy to holiday or live in.
However, unlike the popular regions of Tuscany and Umbria for example, Puglia has never been a ‘fashionable’ region of Italy and this is why property prices remain affordable and the abundance of real estate available for sale in Italy‘s Puglia is impressive. Accessibility used to be an issue which restricted interest in this part of Italy but now the accessibility to Puglia is improving all the time. Both of the regions two airports, Bari and Brindisi receive regular direct flights from across the UK and nowhere in Puglia is more than an hour or so drive away from an airport.
Interest in Apulia is often focused on Puglia’s trullo dwellings (pictured) which are small whitewashed homes with conical shaped roofs. These properties offer a property investor excellent opportunity for rental income and also capital appreciation. A trullo in need of renovation is considered one of the better buys in Puglia and such a property starts from around EUR 30 - 40,000. These trulli are exceptionally in demand by investors because they know that the amount spent on renovation will immediately be added to the property in value terms when complete, and the property will become easy to let out to the tourist market or to resell on to those looking for a unique property in the sun.
Alternatively there are many town houses and villas for sale in Puglia along the coast and in Apulia’s pretty medieval villages and towns, and now some new developments are beginning to take shape offering properties for sale to the second home hunter or retiree in search of that perfect getaway. Quality off plan apartments start from around EUR 90,000 and a villa for sale in Puglia with pool and close to the sea will cost from around EUR 160,000.
