Brittany is one of the most popular destinations for both British and French buyers seeking an unspoilt French region with plenty of properties available at affordable prices.
Inland renovation projects start from as little EUR 25,000 and with most properties no more than an hour’s drive from the sea, anyone seeking property for sale in Brittany will benefit from the beauty of the region and the wild, rocky and rugged coastlines.
Geographically and culturally Brittany is slightly isolated from the rest of France with Breton still spoken and taught across the region. It has a unique feel about it; while it is unmistakeably French, Brittany is also very special and it has such a strong attraction that it is actually one of the most popular regions for British holiday makers travelling to France.
Average property prices range from £70,000 to £130,000 with renovation projects starting from as little as £17,000 and superior properties in the most popular area along the Gulf of Morbihan reaching in excess of £300,000. This means that the market provides opportunities for all budgets, and most foreign buyers in Brittany purchase without the need of finance.
Because of the popularity of the entire region and British investors’ increased buying power in the last five years, property prices across the region have been enjoying a boom but in general the region is still one of the most affordable in France for real estate.
If you’re looking for property for sale in Brittany the most popular hotspots are Dinard, Dinan, Saint-Malo, Rennes, Brest, Lorient, Quimper and of course the Gulf of Morbihan (or Golfe du Morbihan).
Rennes and Brest are beautiful and ancient university cities but are not known for their tourism attraction. Both are strong working communities offering good facilities, amenities and transport links. Both cities are very popular with French buyers and Rennes was recently voted one of the top places to live in France. As they are both major cities property prices tend to be on the steep side with a four bedroom home in Rennes starting from £200,000 for example.
Dinard, Dinan and Saint-Malo are seaside towns all located on the northern coastline of Brittany and very popular particularly with British and Parisian holidaymakers. Each town has its own unique charm and offers a range of excellent amenities and facilities to both residents and tourists. Property in these towns is highly desirable among British and Parisian buyers and as a result prices are rising. Renovation projects can start from as little as EUR 40,000 though.
The Gulf of Morbihan is located in Southern Brittany and the area benefits from a microclimate that offers residents and visitors mild winters and a Mediterranean summer season. There are many islands off the coast and a large number of them are privately owned retreats which ties in with the fact that this is the most exclusive area of Brittany. Property prices are reflected in the exclusivity, popularity and desirability of the area but it is possible to find a one bedroom cottage from as little as EUR 80,000.
Brittany has been given the nickname “little Britain” because of the numbers of Brits who own second homes or who have retired to the region in recent years. And when you visit Brittany you will be struck by the stunning scenery, traditional pretty villages, friendly local people and the wealth of history and chances are you’ll be hunting in estate agency windows for property for sale in Brittany too!
