The south central region of Portugal called Alentejo actually borders the Algarve to the south but it has so much more going for it than packed out summertime beaches and golf courses! For a start it has far more affordable property prices than the Algarve, and for another thing, Alentejo has such dramatic and diverse countryside that there is a town, village or rural location to suit everyone’s tastes in this part of the nation.
So, forget the Algarve with its high property prices, and buy property in Alentejo in Portugal instead, especially if you want to live in ‘real Portugal. Away from the maddening crowds and the sometimes excessive summertime heat which is exacerbated by the high levels of tourism on the Algarve, Alentejo has so much charm and appeal, it really is worth closer inspection.
The Alentejo region reaches from the port of Sines down to Cape de São Vicente along the stunning western coast and then it stretches inland across rolling plains, through vineyards and around cork oak forests to reach the granite hills which border Spain.
The region is highly dominated by agriculture and is actually nicknamed the ‘bread basket of Portugal’ because it is such a high producer of food for the entire nation. Geographically the region is very diverse and you have rolling hills lush plains and arid pockets, stunning coastline, national parks and rich, fertile soil in which everything from grains to sunflowers, fruit to vegetables and from olives to grapes for wine are produced.
In terms of the properties available across Alentejo you have an incredibly diverse array to choose from. There are coastal developments slowly but surely appearing which naturally appeal to those searching for a place in the sun in which to holiday and enjoy the pristine beaches down as far as the Algarve and up as far as the Costa Azul. At the time of writing this there is an attractive and well appointed two bedroom apartment for sale in Santo Andre which is close to the beach and which is priced at EUR 122,205 for example.
Or if you prefer the Alentejo region because it boasts such history and rural charm, what about a house in the countryside close to the Megalithic remains, Roman ruins, Mediaeval castles and Baroque citadels for which this part of Portugal is internationally famed? Ruins on substantial plots of land are for sale from EUR 60,000 and could inspire you to build your very own palace in the Portuguese interior?
Or if you fancy a luxury villa like you might find on the Algarve but for sale at a fraction of the price, there are homes for sale from EUR 225,000 featuring three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an office, a garage and an expansive garden with room for a pool.
And finally, if you’re thinking of buying property in Portugal and starting your own business, there is real estate for sale within walking distance of the beach in Alentejo which is fully licensed for tourism and which includes a traditional farmhouse property as well as an annex with 3 rooms to rent for B and B on the market for EUR 430,000.
As you can see, Alentejo has charm, beauty and affordable property prices! What’s not to like!
