What do Gary Neville, David Beckham and Jean Alesi` have in common, besides being sport celebrities? The three of them together with a huge number of other international celebrities, business people, and common folk own property in Malta.
Throughout history, the archipelago has played a key role in major events due to its strategic location, and the future (in view of North Africa’s growing economy) looks even brighter for these sunny islands. Owning a property in Malta does not only offer a sound return on investment, but it also yields outstanding tax benefits for the buyer. The Islands are also an ideal place to raise a family due to the very low crime rate, excellent schooling facilities, outstanding health care, and genuine hospitality from the Islanders.
Due to Malta’s key roles in all the important eras in European history (from the stone-age to the end of the cold war), the Island is a living museum of historical sites, buildings, and artifacts. One of the gems that can be found on the island is the old fortified city of Mdina. Walking through the narrow streets of this city, one feels as though he was absorbed by a black hole and thrown back into medieval times. The architecture is jaw dropping, and the views are simply astounding. Needless to say, The Silent City (as it is nicknamed) is a host to some of the Island’s best restaurants and cafes.
As you walk out of the City’s main gate, you can start wondering how you can emulate Neville, Beckham and Alesi`; or whether you can outdo them in style without spending heaps of money. The answer lies five minutes walking distance away from Mdina.
The featured property is a 500 year old house situated in a quaint alley just off the main street. It ticks all the boxes that any home buyer looks for. The property has a footprint of 275 square meters spread over two floors, enjoys plenty of natural light, is close to all amenities, and makes a truly wonderful home.
This house is adorned with original features like flagstone, birth rooms, pointed arches, niches, corbels, wooden beams, central courtyard, cobbled walls, inset cupboards, Maltese patterned tiles, sculptures . . . and an original side door that is as old as the house itself!
In true fashion of the houses built in those times, all the rooms are built around a central courtyard in order to maximise on natural light. As you open the main door, you will instantly get a feel of what you will experience as you go round the house.
The lounge - which is the first room that welcomes you into the house - measures 6m x 4m. It makes a perfect family room both in summer and in winter. The high ceiling (it’s around 4m high) keeps the room cool during the hot summer months, while the Franklin wrought iron Fireplace is a very efficient heat source for winter while you entertain some friends or watch television comfortably on the sofa.
The ground floor also hosts a study/library (which can easily be converted into a guest bedroom should you prefer not to have a study), an elevated bath/shower room, a conservatory, and an astounding kitchen and dining room. The ambiance in this room makes a perfect setting for a romantic dinner, or some good wine drinking and cheese fondue. This is the room where one can admire the old architectural design that has long since been forgotten. There are four pointed arches, corbels, unrefined stone slabs, cobbled walls, an inset cupboard, and a door that predates the knights . . . . all in one room!
The staircase leading to the first floor was designed to be well laid out and comfortable to climb. This area is very well lit thanks to a big skylight in the middle of the ceiling, and a 3 storey high glass/aluminium wall (inspired by one of the paintings of Mondrian). The first is home to the sleeping quarters with three large bedrooms. One of the bedrooms has an en-suite shower room while another one has 2 birth rooms. It’s like having 4 rooms in one: 2 below, and 2 above!
On the first floor, there is a separate staircase leading to the washroom and roofs. The washroom measures 5m x 2.5. The house layout makes it possible to use separate roofs for different purposes. Once can easily have a roof garden together with a barbeque area. Since Malta enjoys good weather for at least nine months out of twelve, this can be a favourite spot for entertaining guests.
The house is expertly renovated and no cent was spared during the conversion works. For this reason, maintenance costs are reduced to the barest minimum. The thick walls, high ceilings, good ventilation, insulation of hot water pipes, and connections through the well and the water storage tank further reduce the running costs.
Additionally, all bedrooms have satellite and telephone ports in order to meet the demands of modern living.
Despite the age of the house, all services (water, electricity, and drains) have been installed very recently, and both the telephone connections and video hall porter are connected through CAT 5e cables.
If you buy the property now, you will have the opportunity to do the last touches according to your personal tastes as the main bathroom and the washroom will be undergoing the final touches soon.
The house is being sold directly from the owner for €370,000. Should you be interested in viewing the property, please contact the owner on +35699990312 or
