Shelter Offshore’s Alternative Overseas Retirement Destinations

Published on Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Shelter Offshore’s Alternative Overseas Retirement DestinationsHaving spent two days reviewing the top ten retirement destinations in the world as chosen by Forbes magazine, we thought that there are quite a few ideal hotspots missing from their list.  As a result, we’ve decided to put together Shelter Offshore’s alternative overseas retirement destinations list for anyone wondering about where in the world they should go and live when they retire.

The Forbes list did cover some of the evergreen and emerging markets – from Australia to Austria and from Canada to Panama for example - but it missed off some excellent choices such as Cyprus, New Zealand, Argentina and Belize, to name but a handful.

If you’re contemplating moving abroad in retirement and you want to find the perfect paradise on earth for you, our selection may give you a few more suggestions to research.  As always we will present the pros and cons of a country as well, so that you can get an initial feel of whether a given nation suits you or not.

Review of Forbes’ Top 10 Overseas Retirement Destinations Part 2

Published on Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Review of Forbes’ Top 10 Overseas Retirement Destinations Part 2Yesterday we looked at the first five destinations that Forbes have determined are the top of the pile when it comes to ideal overseas retirement destinations.  The Forbes list has been complied on the back of their own research which has been looked at in relation to leading international surveys from the likes of Mercer about where in the world it’s affordable and safe, attractive and good to live.

In the list of ideal overseas retirement destinations are evergreen favourites like France and Australia, but there are a couple of surprising entries such as Austria and Panama too – therefore we thought we should delve deeper and present to you the main reasons for and perhaps against moving to each country in turn so that the list is more accessible and understandable.

After all, to be forewarned is to be forearmed, and if we can shed a little more light on why a given destination is in the Forbes list, this may help your own research and decision-making when you are thinking about where in the world you could perhaps live in retirement.  Yesterday we covered Australia, Austria, Canada, France and Ireland…and today we’re going to be looking more in depth at why Italy, Malaysia, Panama, Spain and Thailand have made the Forbes top 10 overseas retirement destinations list.

Review of Forbes’ Top 10 Overseas Retirement Destinations Part 1

Published on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Review of Forbes’ Top 10 Overseas Retirement Destinations Part 1Forbes drew on the research of leading institutions and bodies around the world to compile their list of what are theoretically the 10 best places to retire abroad.  For example, they used the research and findings from the likes of Mercer and FutureBrand and came up with a ranking system to determine where in the world are safe, welcoming, accessible retirement havens offering a high quality of life.

The top ten list includes many typical favourites from Australia to Canada, from France to Spain and from Panama to Italy.  However, there are a couple of unusual entries in the form of Thailand and Austria that have surprised a few would-be retirees who have been researching their options and alternatives, so we thought we should perhaps provide a review of Forbes’ top 10 overseas retirement destinations so that you can see what’s so good about each choice.

Additionally, in the spirit of fair and balanced journalism, we’re going to present the good, the bad and the ugly about each nation in turn as well, allowing a would-be retiree thinking of moving abroad and looking for the best place to live to understand which elements of a new life in a given nation they will enjoy, and which they may have to endure!  This is part one covering Australia, Austria, Canada, France and Ireland…and in part two we will examine Italy, Malaysia, Panama, Spain and Thailand.

More Than Money: Why Britons Expatriate

Published on Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

More Than Money: Why Britons Expatriate I was recently asked to comment by a journalist on why Britons expatriate, particularly focusing on why we Brits have a passion for France.  The answers just rolled off the tongue as they always do, because working daily on an expat resource such as Shelter Offshore means that you have daily dealings with people planning a new life abroad.

The same reasons for leaving their old life in the UK behind are cited time and time again – and now finally we have proof in the form of a ‘quality of life’ survey that it’s so much more than money when it comes to the main reasons why Britons expatriate.  Of course, we could have told you this based on what we are told daily – but it is really positive to have it in the form of a proven resource.

The uSwitch.com ‘European Quality of Life Index’ surveyed the statistics and facts behind our lifestyles in the UK and across Europe in nations such as France, Spain, Germany and Poland and discovered that whilst we in the UK earn well on average, we have the worst quality of life in the whole of Europe.

How to Find the Perfect Place to Retire Abroad Part 1

Published on Friday, October 16th, 2009

How to Find the Perfect Place to Retire Abroad Part 1Many articles have been written about the perfect retirement hotspot overseas by many different publications.  However, in truth each recommendation is based on either the preference of the article’s author for what constitutes a nice place to live in in retirement, or certain assumed criteria about the would-be retirees that the author is writing the article about and for.

The reason I say this is because there is no such thing as a perfect place to live in in this world of our – all nations, all cities, each residential neighbourhood and even every individual home has good points and bad points about them.  What’s more, where one person may relish the thought of living in perpetual sunshine in retirement, another person might have such fair skin that a sunny retirement home would be totally wrong for them.

So, when it comes down to it, how to find the perfect place to retire abroad is more about finding the perfect place for you to live in in retirement – therefore, in this article we’ll explore the first five of our top ten thought processes and considerations that you need to go through to discover where you would be most happy living abroad.  On Monday we will publish the final five considerations that will hopefully help you find your ideal place to live overseas in retirement.

‘Expat Truth Will Out as the Money Dries Up’ Apparently!

Published on Thursday, October 08th, 2009

Expat Truth Will Out as the Money Dries Up Apparently! The comments made by readers in relation to a recent article in the international version of the Telegraph shocked me this week.  The article was written by an expat living in Spain who was recalling the deterioration of life within an expatriate dominated community following a particularly appalling crime perpetrated over 5 years ago.

The comments that followed publication of the article online came from people from all walks of life with very differing opinions of course – and that’s one of the wonderful advantages of opening up your articles to comments from the public!  But what struck me was how there was an undertone in many comments from those particularly in the UK of quiet satisfaction bordering on glee that the expat ‘truth’ is apparently finally coming out now that the money is drying up abroad.  The ‘truth’ being that it’s not perfect abroad…

It was as if those who had read the article had failed to understand any point it raised or made, but instead focused on the fact that bad things can happen abroad, so therefore the idea that moving abroad can bring about positive changes must be a myth.  This led me to thinking, do people really believe that expats have been lured abroad by lies, and forced into saying it’s all wonderful and so much better than Britain, but that now because many expats are being forced home because of the weak pound and weak economies internationally they are allowed to voice the ‘truth’ that it’s actually not all that amazing abroad after all?

Move Further Abroad - Europe’s Doomed

Published on Monday, October 05th, 2009

Move Further Abroad – Europe’s DoomedFollowing suggestions that Tony Blair, (harbinger of UK’s economic doom), is perhaps to become president of the EU, we feel that it’s probably time to move much further abroad because Europe’s clearly doomed!

Just the mere suggestion that Blair could be considered for this new post means that Europe needs to be left well alone in terms of a destination for expatriating Britons, and when you throw in the uncertainty surrounding the future of the euro as a strong global currency, it really does make sense to research alternative nations to call home.

Unfortunately for us Brits, countries in Europe are generally the easiest for us to move to with the least bureaucracy involved in the relocation process – but in this report we’ll show you how, with just a little more effort, you can move further afield and perhaps achieve a far more positive lifestyle abroad.
