Living abroad with children often proves simultaneously incredible and daunting. Many parents adore the idea of teaching their children about the world and different cultures. These same parents however, often wonder how exactly they can still manage to expose their youngsters to their native cultures whilst living hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away. If your plan is to expose your offspring to the best of both worlds, there are some excellent ways you can share the cultures of your countries of domicile and residence whilst living aboard. Even with very young children, it is feasible for parents to acclimate their children to move comfortably in their country of residence and their country of origin.

Language – if at all possible it is a fantastic idea to teach children both languages. This will help them move through the country they live in with ease and also assist them on trips back to their mother country. Since many expats only plan to live abroad for a few years at a time, teaching both languages simply makes sense in the eyes of many parents.
Schooling – this can be a sticky subject. If the local schools are up to British standards and happen to be safe, this is an excellent way to expose youngsters to the culture and customs around them. If they are not, consider international schools or home schooling. To augment lessons with some hands-on cultural experiences, consider enrolling youth in after school programs that locals attend with their children too.
Holidays – these special days can very much enlighten anyone on the traditions and customs of a culture. Unless it is considered a religious affront, consider observing special days from both cultures. Children will certainly adore the extra festivities and they are likely to learn a thing or two along the way.
Basic customs – it can be incredibly daunting to teach very young children the ins and outs of polite behaviour for two very different cultures. If the rules of the road are very different, consider teaching them the set they will need the most whilst young and add in lessons from the other as they grow. Subtle differences in customs and behaviours can get people into hot water in some circles, so arming them with a grasp of both eventually is a good idea.
Living abroad with children is a fantastic way to help youngsters see just how big the world around them is. To make the most of it, it makes sense to expose youngsters to both cultures that affect them. The effort is not as difficult as many parents might think.
