Shelter Offshore has been asked to take part in a live debate and phone in on BBC West Midlands this Tuesday, April the 13th from 11am. The ‘Mornings with Joanne Malin’ show is running a weeklong series looking at retirement, and on Tuesday they’re going to be focusing specifically on retiring abroad.
The producer of the Joanne Malin show, Gary Butcher, pointed out to us that other than Shelter Offshore, there is seemingly a deficit in terms of independent resources available on the Internet to assist and advise those in the UK who are contemplating their retirement overseas. We are proud of the fact that when researching for the segment, Shelter Offshore was the site that kept coming up trumps with the information the producers required.
We only introduced our dedicated ‘retirement abroad’ segment last year, having previously discussed retiree specific topics within categories relating to specific countries. We recognised that there has been sustained and increased interest in moving overseas later in life, and that those who are thinking about making such a move have very specific requirements for targeted and relevant advice…hence the need for a dedicated category. We are therefore well placed to speak on the Joanne Malin Show, and we’re looking forward to sharing retirement abroad advice with her listeners on Tuesday.
If you would like to tune in you can do so even if you’re not in the UK, you just need Internet access! Go to the BBC West Midlands website and choose the ‘listen live’ button.
Whilst we don’t know what the show’s listeners will bring up and ask questions about, we’re sure that there will be plenty of people asking questions about the logistics involved with moving abroad in retirement. There is a lot to plan and prepare for when you move at any stage in your life – but when you combine retirement with a relocation abroad, planning is paramount to a successful move.
If you’re thinking of leaving the UK behind as soon as you can retire from your job, and you want to enjoy all the free time that retirement brings but do so from the comfort of a new home in a new nation, the sooner you start planning the better. Do your research into which country will suit your lifestyle requirements – bearing in mind everything from the cost of living to the climate - make sure your money matters are in hand and well organised so that you have enough money to move, find a home and live on in retirement, and ensure that you cover essential aspects such as how you will be able to afford to access healthcare once you move overseas, and how you will claim your pension and any benefit entitlements once you’re living abroad.
We’re sure many of these themes will come up on Tuesday, and we look forward to discussing them and hopefully helping out anyone who has a dream of living overseas in retirement.
