Living in Sydney, AustraliaAccording to recent research based on which locations worldwide are most popular with expatriates, an increasingly large number of Europeans dream about living in Sydney, Australia.

The popularity of the location comes down to the fact that those surveyed rated the quality of life achievable in Sydney incredibly highly, and believed that Australia is a country offering unlimited possibilities.

These generally held opinions are backed up by the research undertaken and collated by the likes of Mercer Human Resources Consulting and the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook.

According to Mercer Human Resources Consulting, Sydney is one of the top ten cities in the whole world in terms of the quality of life it offers its residents; and according to the 2005 IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook, Australia is the number one country in the whole world for quality of life.

Sydney is Australia’s largest city, it is located in New South Wales and although it is not the capital city of Australia it is probably the country’s most famous because of its stunning landmarks such as the Opera House and Harbour Bridge (pictured).

Sydney is also Australia’s finance, trade, transport and cultural hub and the most important city in Australia for tourism.  Many who choose to immigrate to Australia for employment purposes actually end up working in Sydney’s central business district where the major international banks and businesses have offices and where job prospects are generally plentiful for well qualified and experienced professionals.

Those who travel to Australia and arrive in Sydney often end up falling in love with the city because of its laid back charm, its stunning coastline, the young and vibrant pace of life and also because the opportunities available in the city in terms of work and education are so rich.

As a result of this fact an increasingly large number of international students are choosing to study at the universities and tertiary colleges in Sydney because they can combine a first class education in Australia with life in one of the top ten cities in the world.  Furthermore, of those people who choose to apply for immigration to the Australian government a large percentage cite Sydney as their chosen destination.

In terms of the cost of living in Sydney, Australia it has risen quite substantially in recent years.  As a major city of the world you would expect accommodation and entertainment costs to be high, but on top of this the day to day costs of utilities, transport, food and drink are higher in Sydney than elsewhere in Australia.

Having said that, the city is still considered to be an affordable destination for the likes of travellers and students, and when you compare it to other major cities in the world like London, Paris and New York for example, Sydney is far more of an affordable destination.  This is because the greater urban area of Sydney takes in many affordable districts and it is only those who choose to live, work, shop and dine in the City of Sydney that face the highest costs.

Statistics and surveys aside, Sydney in Australia is one of the most exciting, interesting, attractive and friendly cities in the world and one where everyone who visits will find something of interest to see, something exciting to do and somewhere fantastic to stay!
