Kyrenia is probably the most famous town in North Cyprus because of its picturesque and peaceful unspoilt harbour area and the imposing castle that overlooks it. All tourists naturally head for Girne and the mix of locals, expats and tourists makes for a lively and international town where there is always a great deal to do and see.
Some of the island’s best restaurants, bars and hotels can be found in Kyrenia – those living in Northern Cyprus may prefer the tranquil settings of the bars and restaurants in The Rocks and Colony hotels or the livelier scene in either The Villa Swallow or Shakers Music Bar for example.
When it comes to the practicalities of day to day living in Northern Cyprus, Kyrenia is the town where expatriates will find DIY shops, electrical goods stores, clothing and furniture outlets – all the main retail supplies that one would expect and require when starting a brand new life abroad. Most of the tradesmen an expatriate requires can also be found in Girne – from those to install SKY TV to those who can unblock a drain or fix a leaking roof.
Tempo and Lemar supermarkets also have stores in and around Kyrenia and there is a weekly market on a Wednesday where one can buy traditional village bread, fruit and veg, olives, olive oil, helim cheese etc., etc.
All the major banks of TRNC have representative or main offices in Kyrenia, HSBC in North Cyprus has 2 offices in Kyrenia as does Turk Bankasi for example. When it comes to paying the monthly electric, water and telephone bills (for those lucky enough to get a land line installed!), the majority of banks now offer direct debit services. Alternatively the Beledeysi or council offices, telephone and electric companies are all in Kyrenia and located centrally making them easy to locate.
