Ankara is an incredibly old city.  To give you an idea, its name derives from the Hittite name given it prior to 1200 BC, Ankuwash.  Prior to that it was called Angora.  Through its history, Ankara has played host to such peoples as the Galatians, Romans, Hittites and more.

The climate in Ankara is considered incredibly continental.  Unlike those living in Turkey in the coastal regions, Ankara residents can expect cold, snowy winters and very dry, hot summers.  The climate is often described as a little bit harsh.  Despite this, many expatriates find the sights and flavours of Ankara make it well worth enduring bad weather.

Those living in Turkey in Ankara will find an amazing blend of very modern buildings and industrial complexes with incredibly old landmarks.  The area around Ankara is loaded with important archaeological sites left behind during the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods.

Some of the sights that delight residents and holidaymakers alike when this hilly city is discussed include: -

The Temple of Augustus and Rome – Built around 10 AD this is one of the most highly visited historic ruins in Ankara.

Anitkabir – This museum is located near the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.  It is a favourite stop for holidaymakers and residents.

Museum of Anatolian Civilisations – Located inside the ancient and quite famous Ankara Castle, this stop includes historic artworks and treasures dating all the way back to Paleolithic times.  It also includes Roman, Urartian and Hittite art.

Roman Theatre – These ruins include the remains of the stage and the backstage area.  They are located near the castle.

Ankara is loaded with both ancient sites and very modern landmarks.  Those living in Ankara in Turkey will also find a thriving arts scene that includes an opera house, ballet, symphony and more.  The city’s parks are considered legendary as are its shopping districts.

Living in Turkey and calling Ankara home allows expats to experience the best of both worlds – very ancient and quite modern.  This Turkish city offers much to see and do and plenty to explore.
