In the northeastern part of Portugal residents will discover plenty of opportunities to get their adrenaline pumping at a heart-stopping pace.  The Trás-os-Montes region is ideal for white-water rafting, mountain climbing and even hang gliding.  Expatriates and holiday makers alike also enjoy exploring Serra do Alvão.  This area is perfect for hiking, climbing and even off-road tours.  Since holidaymakers are common in these areas, it is more than possible to rent gear on site in many northeastern hotspots for high adventure.  There is no reason to think the beaches are the only appeal in Portugal.

The northwestern area of Portugal known as Minho is also an ideal destination for those who love high adventure.  The multitude of rivers here are favourites for white water rafters.  The choices include the Minho River itself, the Ave, Lima and more.  Within the boundaries of Peneda Gerês National Park many expatriates find enough adventure to last them a lifetime.  This park presents plenty of opportunities for hiking, climbing and even exploring waterfalls.  It is also known for its breathtaking views too and so may also be a perfect place to look for your ultimate property in Portugal?

The Azores islands are ideal for outdoors lovers.  The islands are surrounded by warm waters and are also home to a number of inland natural swimming pools created long ago courtesy of volcanic activity.  Expatriates who trek to this part of Portugal tend to do so to boat, sail, fish, body board and surf.  Many also enjoy taking in the sights from the skies with aerial tours.  Others prefer to go on horseback so they can soak in all the natural splendor from the ground, up close and personal so to speak.

Winter sports lovers living in Portugal will find the winters also bring with them an opportunity for skiing.  Although Portugal isn’t as well loved for its slopes as other European destinations, expatriates with a desire to get a little downhill action in will find areas such as Serra da Estrela do provide opportunities for snow based fun.

From its incredible beaches to its wonderful rivers and mountains, Portugal offers a lot of opportunity for expatriates who like to take in the great outdoors year-round.
