Living in Canada and Calling Hamilton Home
Focusing on the city of Hamilton in Ontario for expats who want to know where's best for living in Canada
As the Canadian property market continues to grow in leaps and bounds, many would be expats are eying this country with interest. With its incredible landscapes, year-round tourist draws and booming, cosmopolitan cities, living in Canada certainly has its appeals. One area that many are finding attractive is Ontario’s Hamilton.
Located in close proximity to London and not terribly far from Toronto, this city with a population of more than a half million is considered the third largest in this populated province. In this article we will explore some of the aspects of living in Canada and calling Hamilton home.
Hamilton is a new city by British comparisons. It was founded after the War of 1812 and is located on the west end of Lake Ontario. The city itself is considered the centre of a rather populated and industrialised region. As a result residents of Hamilton find they very rarely have to travel far for just about any convenience imaginable. The city is after all, Canada’s ninth largest.
With a continental climate that is warm in the summer and quite cold in the winter, Hamilton enjoys all four seasons in spectacular fashion. Its residents are treated to some incredible sights and the city itself is a favourite among filmmakers for its bustle, natural beauty and unique landmarks.
If living in Canada and calling Hamilton home sounds attractive to you, there are some destinations that make it even more appealing. Some of the major draws of Hamilton include: -
Lake Ontario – famous for its fishing opportunities, this Great Lake laps at Hamilton’s shores. In addition to commercial operations, the city does have a number of beaches and conservation areas that add to the natural beauty found here.
Royal Botanical Gardens – this destination covers some 980 hectacres of preserved land. It is considered one of the biggest tourist attractions found between Toronto and Niagara Falls.
The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum – this is a favourite destination for aviation buffs.
Canadian Football Hall of Fame – the greats of Canadian football are honoured in this attraction found within Hamilton.
Webster Falls – although not considered the attraction that nearby Niagara is, this natural feature found in Hamilton is breathtaking nonetheless.
In addition to some of its natural and historic attractions, Hamilton is also home to a booming industrial community, a Canadian Football League team, a host of retail outlets, cultural activities and more. With its proximity to Toronto and London, many find Hamilton is the perfect location for taking in the best Canada has to offer.
Whilst housing prices in the whole of Canada have been growing steadily, many Brits will find them quite reasonable in comparison to the UK’s present pricing. With homes selling on average in the CAD 300,000 range, buying property in Canada and living here measures up very well to Europe, especially when a lifestyle is backed by pounds instead of Canadian dollars.
For Brits, living in Canada offers the appeal of common culture, language and even a similar form of government. This country has drawn in more than 600,000 Brits already, and more are finding the opportunities in Canada are too good to pass up.
