If you’re dreaming of beautiful Caribbean waters, a distinctly British system and a property market that is taking off, chances are you have Belize on your mind.  Should you desire to pick up sticks and move to this commonwealth country nearly a world away, there are some things you might need to be aware of.  Living in Belize is a wonderful experience that many expats adore, but there are some rules of the road that expats and retirees need to follow.  There are also a few warnings that go along with living in this tropical paradise.

In this article, we’ll explore some of the quirks about living in Belize.  Whilst the weather, friendly people and cost of living do very much appeal, playing by the rules is important for new residents.  Understanding what to watch out for can also make living in Belize go much more smoothly.

Belize is still gaining ground in regard to its popularity among Brits.  Last year nearly 10,000 UK citizens visited this Caribbean country.  The overall expat community here is growing in leaps and bounds as Brits, Canadians and most especially Americas lay their claim to this tropical paradise.

Living in Belize is a little different than living in European expat hotspots.  One of the first things that stand out as different from many other destinations around the world is the relatively low threat of terrorism.  Whilst most European countries remain on high alert, Belize barely registers a blip on the radar.  Despite this, there is a fair amount of crime that expats should be aware of.  Muggings, violent crimes and occasional civil demonstrations that turn rowdy are a part of the landscape here – especially in the bigger cities.  The British government warns its citizens to steer clear of alleys, dark passages and forested areas after dark.

Whilst crime is a concern, most of the other quirks of living in Belize are fairly simple to accommodate for.  The major taboo rules not to break generally center on illegal drug use.  Possession of any kind of controlled or banned substance is considered a serious offense here.  The British government urges its citizens to just say no and keep their noses clean.

Getting around Belize is fairly simple.  Many expats in resort areas rely on their feet, bicycles and public transport.  It is possible for newcomers to drive on their UK licences or an International Driving Permit.  The British government does warn that driving in Belize is a bit risky though!  The standards are considered quite poor by British measure and accidents are very common.

No paradise is completely perfect.  All nations have their ups and downs.  Although Belize does have some downs, most expats say the ups more than make up for them.
