Living aboard and bringing children along can prove to be an incredible experience for the entire family. To say the prospect isn’t without its serious challenges however, would be a big fib! Perhaps one of the trickiest areas that would-be expats face is in determining how best to educate their children in their new country of choice.
Whilst most international destinations do have public schools expat children can attend and American and British schools available for those who can fee pay, these options do not work for all families. In some cases, home school is deemed the most suitable road to take. In this article we look at living abroad and educating children at home.
Seriously considering the implications of home schooling children before picking up sticks and moving across the world is a very good idea. Whilst some families take to this like fish do water, others fail miserably. Before you leave the UK or whatever country you call home, consider these things: -
Your patience level. Are you the kind of parent who can get through anything with your child and keep your temper under control? Or, does the prospect of helping a third-grader work out math problems make your skin crawl? If you fall into the skin crawling category, home school might not be the best choice for you or your children!
Your qualifications. Although it’s true the qualifications for home school supervision are simply parenthood, do you really have what it takes to help your youngsters excel? If you cannot figure out how to help them through the difficult subjects, seeking out help for these areas could be in order. Sometimes private tutors or international schools can help on a subject-by-subject basis.
Your discipline. Do you really have what it takes to make sure your children keep their noses to the grindstone? If not, you could be doing them a huge disservice.
The support you have available. Before leaving your native country, check with local school officials about suggested curriculum and any possible testing and/or accreditation your young learners can obtain to prove they have met student standards for the UK, America, France or wherever you herald from. You may find there are testing facilities within the country you plan on moving to that can help ensure your child remains on level or exceeds it. Or, you might be apprised of other options for education that can assure advancement into higher learning later in life if it is desired.
Affordability. Home schooling doesn’t come with as cheap a price tag as many believe. By the time books are purchased, teaching guides, testing materials and other classroom essentials are funded, this can set a family back a bit. Carefully review financials to see if this really fits into the budget.
Living abroad can be a fantastic adventure for an entire family. If schooling is a concern for young family members, carefully weigh the options before selecting a route. Do keep an open mind once you arrive. You might find public or private schools make more sense. If home schooling seems like the best choice, make sure you are really up to the task before setting your heart on this possibility. Home schooling can be a wonderful choice, but the fact of the matter is, it simply is not for everyone.
