You’re fed up with the same scenery day in and day out. You long for something different – a new pace of life. Just like thousands of your fellow Britons, the idea of expatriating to an exotic destination really appeals. Your finances are in place, you’ve chosen a destination country and you think you’re all ready to go and make a new start of it. Are you really?
Expatriate Essentials - Before You Move
Many successful expatriates have simply researched, packed up and moved. They love their life and what they are doing. Others, however, arrive in their new homes and find out the pictures didn’t tell the real story. For these people, the choice to expatriate turns out to be a bad one – at least in the destination they picked.
To help prevent this from happening to you, many expats strongly urge those who wish to follow in their footsteps to take the effort to visit their country of choice for a bit of an extended holiday first. If you have a country, region and even city or village picked out, this is simply a very wise thing to do. This is especially so if your honest intention is to expatriate for an extended period of time. You really need to see if you can fit in and feel at home.
When you arrive for your holiday, of course, take in the famous sights. That’s half the fun. Your trip should go beyond that, however. Spend some time in places you’d actually frequent if you lived there. Find out how to shop for groceries, where your children might go to school, and even visit the pubs and restaurants locals frequent. Also, consider looking into the types of community activities you might be interested in after arrival. Look into the local expat community, too. This can help you see what kind of support you might have once there.
The idea behind the pre-move holiday is to really determine if you believe you’ll feel comfortable living in your choice of location. If you can really see yourself shopping, dining, working and living there, you’re on the right track. If you feel like a stranger in a strange land – alone in a crowd of strangers – you might not be on the right path.
Unless you’re retiring to a new country, the rigors of daily living are quite likely to take over after you arrive. Between getting settled in and working, the luster of your new home will very likely lose its sheen quite quickly. Don’t let this happen!
Expatriate Essentials - After You Move
Even after you arrive, remember your real reason for moving was to see, do and live something different. Continue to put on the hat of a tourist every now and again and explore things you’ve never seen or done before. This will help acclimate you to your new home better and will keep its wonders alive for you at the same time.
Expatriating can prove an adventure or a disaster! Taking the time to really think the decision through can help ensure the latter is NOT the outcome you experience!
