The range of books available from specialist publishers ‘How To Books’ encompass all aspects of living and working abroad and finding work overseas. The titles that ‘How To Books’ publish are quite simply fantastic - all are written by authors who are expert in the given country and all focus down on the specifics of finding employment in the given country, the different working practices, how to get ahead in your particular field etc., etc.
One specific title that may be of interest to the expatriate who’s in the planning stages of relocating abroad is ‘Getting a Job Abroad’ by Roger Jones. The major recruitment agencies all have an internet presence but there are also specific job search sites for expatriates that are either divided by country or by career.
An example of one such site is Jobs in Dubai - an excellent resource for all the latest positions available to expatriates in every conceivable industry in Dubai.
Sites like Monster and JobServe are good places to search generically per skill set or desired career abroad, alternatively use one of the major search engines to search for sites specializing in career opportunities advertised in a given location or for a given career.
3) Expatriates Networking Abroad - Forums
One of the best ways to find your next employment opportunity or employer is by networking - but when you’re planning a move abroad it’s impossible to know where to go and who to rub shoulders with!
Expat forums are probably the best place to begin - here you can meet a bunch of likeminded people and even people from ‘back home’ sometimes - they all already live and work abroad and some will even be living or working in your specific location or career field.
Using expatriate forums can help you find out about the best places to go and be seen, the best places to go and meet the movers and shakers in your industry and they can also let you find out about who’s recruiting locally. As well as helping you network and find a new job, expat forums can also simply tell you where the best bars and hangouts are for you to go and meet fellow expat workers and discuss life the universe and everything abroad!
