Country Guide BelizeCountry Profile of Belize

This short guide to Belize should give you a brief insight into one of the most beautiful Central American countries.

Location

Belize is located in Central America facing the beautiful Caribbean Sea.  It has 386km of mainly unspoilt coastline and borders Mexico to the northwest and Guatemala to the south and west.

Climate, Weather & Environment

Belize enjoys a sub-tropical climate, lush tropical forests, stunning beaches, abundant and diverse wildlife, incredible Mayan ruins - the Maya were Mesoamerican Indian people whose civilization reached its height around 300 AD and among other things they are noted for, the Maya are famed for their architecture: and if you choose to visit Belize you can enjoy many pastimes from ecotourism, diving and fishing or island hopping!

The country has a growing respect for its ecological welfare and is working to ensure that its increasing tourism trade will not affect the habitats and lives of its sensitive flora and fauna.

Guide to Belize - Historically and Currently

Belize was a British colony up until 1981 and was formally known as British Honduras.  In fact, the Head of State is still the British Monarch.

Guatemala refused to accept Belize’s independence until 1991 but since that time both countries have been working hard to positively resolve border and territory disputes.

Belize operates under the democratic political system it adopted from the UK and has managed to avoid some of the corruption and crime associated with certain other Central American countries whilst remaining a laid back, privacy respecting country.  It does suffer some drug related crime though.
